| Charlie Kimball began go-karting at the age of 9 in Southern California. What started out as a weekend pastime quickly developed into something more serious as Kimball displayed speed and talent on the track. He competed in various classes and in 2001, won 7 National go-karting championships.
For his 16th birthday, Charlie had his first test in a Formula car and the rest, as they say, is history. He began open-wheel racing full time in 2002 when he won a scholarship for a full season Barber Dodge.
In 2005, Kimball made the move across the pond and began his assault on European openwheel racing, starting in Formula Ford. He won 2 races and finished 4th in the championship. He graduated to British Formula 3 where he demonstrated his talent by winning 5 races, setting two track records and finishing second in the championship in his rookie season. He became the first American in 13 years to win a British F3 race, shattering the stereotype that Americans are slow!
Kimball moved to the F3 Euroseries in 2006 where he beat current F1 driver Sebstien Vettel at Zandvoort in Holland. In 2007, he moved on to compete in World Series by Renault however his season was cut short as he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and kept from racing in the final championship rounds.
Working with a team of diabetic specialists, Kimball has bounced back for the 2008 season and returns to the F3 Euroseries with PremaPowerteam stronger than ever. |
